In the 2021 Census of Population, Mahone Bay had a population of 1,064. From 2016 to 2021, the population increased by 2.7%. The Mahone Bays’ average age is significantly higher than the provincial average, 60 for Mahone Bay, compared to 46 for Nova Scotia.
Mahone Bay is named after the French word “mahonne,” a low-lying pirate vessel. The bay was a favoured hiding place for pirates.
Mahone Bay was recently named one of Canada’s top ten most beautiful towns by culturetrip.com. The town is famous for its picturesque Three Churches.
Due to the coastal location, the climate of Mahone Bay is moderate, meaning the winters are slightly milder and the summers slightly cooler than most areas at similar latitudes. The summers are comfortable but are getting hotter and more humid. The hottest month is usually August, and the coldest is January. The highest average temperature in Mahone Bay is 75°F in August, and the lowest is 33°F in January. The wettest months are usually November (Avg 216mm; 85") and December (Avg 206mm; 81"). The winter in Mahone Bay is freezing, snowy, and windy. There are an average of 43.7 snowfall days and 461mm (18.15") of snow in the winter. Spring conditions in Mahone Bay arrive late in the season, often not until mid-May due to the cooler ocean temperatures.
